What Does “Holistic” Mean?

Simplistically, the term “holistic” can be defined in the old adage “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. But, when you are in pain or need of relief from stress or anxiety, a simple answer is not enough.

As you may have experienced, traditional medicine tends to concentrate on a very narrow and compartmentalized view of the body. Most doctors specialize in regions of the anatomy, diagnosing dis-ease from a hyper-focused perspective and creating interventions (usually pharmaceutical) to cure or mask illnesses or injuries.

As a holistic practitioner, I see the human in totality – as a unique individual – taking into account the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, cultural and even financial aspects of a person that may or may not affect overall health and well-being.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a healthcare practice that focuses on helping people in all stages of life – from neonatal to end of life – do all of the things that they want and need to do in their daily lives. As an Occupational Therapist, it is my goal to help individuals in my care to function better in the world, adapt to their surroundings, and recover and improve quality of life.

While physical therapy/traditional orthopedics looks to improve the bio-mechanical base by identifying what is wrong with the bones, muscles and ligaments and strengthening its physical support system, occupational therapy considers the person as a whole and how all of the layers of our lives create who we are and how we function. To help a patient live their best life, we must always consider what components of their overall being might be off or in need of support, and work to address those in totality. Occasionally this even includes referrals to other naturopathic specialists or working in tandem with your doctors or specialists.

The Path Back to Your Best Life…

As a Holistic Occupational Therapist, one of the most important things that I will do is listen to you. From the moment of our first interaction until your final appointment, open communication and understanding will remain a constant. This will look like conversations about why you are seeking treatment, aspects of your life that you feel may contribute to the problem or solution, what you have tried in the past to alleviate your symptoms and what you hope to accomplish through therapy. Depending on your comfort level, you may also choose to share information about your background, traumatic events, your worldview and any other topics you feel are relevent. This dialogue, in addition to physical assessments will help me to identify areas of the body where restrictions are causing pain, anxiety, stress or malaise.

In addition to listening and open dialogue, I will use a variety of treatment tools and techniques to help you on your journey to wellness. Each individual will have a treatment plan that is unique to their specific needs and path to healing and may include any or all of the following:
